Settings
Control what Heatwave collects, how much, and for how long.
Open Settings from the Heatwave menu. At the top, a status label tells you whether tracking works: “Tracking live” with the time of the last visit, “Waiting for the first visit”, or “Tracking is off in your theme”.
Each section saves on its own and is published to your store straight away.
Tracking
Shows whether the Heatwave app embed is on, and in which theme, plus when the last visit was received.
- Turn on in theme editor (or Open theme editor when it’s already on) takes you to App embeds.
- Visit your store opens your storefront.
To test, open your store in a private window, accept cookies, then click around for a minute.
Data collection
Shows how many tracked and recorded sessions your plan includes each month. Choose one of two modes:
- Automatic (recommended). Heatwave adjusts every hour to spread your plan over the whole month. The description shows the share of visitors being tracked and recorded right now.
- Set it myself. Fixed shares of visitors, using two sliders:
- Visitors tracked: the share of consenting visitors measured for heatmaps, scrolling, the first screen, behaviour and recommendations.
- Tracked visitors also recorded: the share of those that also get an anonymous replay. Below the slider, Heatwave shows what that works out to as a share of all visitors.
With fixed shares, tracking pauses if you reach your plan limit, until the monthly reset. Set Tracked visitors also recorded to 0% if you don’t want recordings at all.
This section also shows how long your plan keeps data, with a link to compare plans. See Plans and billing.
Privacy
A reminder of what is always protected: typing is hidden in recordings, as are email addresses and phone numbers on the page. Visitors are anonymous, and checkout pages are never recorded.
Two lists let you go further. Put one entry per line, up to 30 entries per list.
- Extra elements to hide in recordings. One CSS selector per line, for example
.loyalty-balanceor#gift-message. These elements show as grey boxes in replays. Ask your developer if you’re not sure which selector to use. - Pages never tracked. One path per line. Use
*as a wildcard:/account*covers all account pages. Nothing at all is collected or recorded on these pages. Paths must start with/and can’t include query strings.
Click Save privacy rules. If an entry isn’t valid, Heatwave tells you which one.
Password-protected store
Only needed if your online store has a password page, for example before launch. Heatwave uses the password to take the page pictures that heatmaps are drawn on.
Enter the storefront password, the one shoppers type, not your admin login, and click Save password. It’s stored encrypted. Use Remove saved password once your store is open.
Your data
Visitor data is deleted automatically after your plan’s retention period. Uninstalling Heatwave deletes everything within 48 hours.
- See everything Heatwave collects opens the Your data page.
- Delete all collected data… permanently deletes every heatmap, recording, behaviour log and recommendation for your store. Type
DELETEto confirm, then click Delete everything. It can’t be undone. Tracking keeps running afterwards with a clean slate, and this month’s plan usage isn’t reset.
